10 Things About Rudy Ruiz

Tell us a bit about you:

I am originally from the Chicago area where I currently live. I attended North Central College in Naperville, IL where I earned my bachelor’s degree in journalism in 2019. My interest in journalism came from being a part of my college’s newspaper where I started as a writer and eventually became an editor. I wrote mostly about music and pop culture news which I have a keen interest in.

What have you enjoyed most about your internship so far?

Over the past four months of my internship, I had plenty of cool opportunities to do research on real world issues and getting to connect clients with journalists across the country. It’s also been great working with the rest of the team on various projects.

What are your hobbies?

I don’t know if listening to music counts as a hobby, but I do listen to music constantly and follow the latest music news. I also enjoy watching the latest trending movies and TV series. When I have time, I enjoy reading books and magazines on different topics.

What skills do you rely on most in graduate school?

Scheduling and time management have to be the most important skills. I keep track of my different work schedules and find time to do homework during the week and on weekends. This way, I know I have time to do everything and keeps me from feeling overwhelmed.

What is your favorite color?

Mint green. It’s a very cool color that works in both modern and vintage settings.

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Mint chocolate chip. I guess I’m a big fan of mint in general! Other than that, any flavor with peanut butter is good with me.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would that be?

To this day, I can’t believe I can say that I’ve visited Scotland twice. I’d love to go back and live in Glasgow. The UK in general has a different feel to it that is more easygoing and doesn’t take life too seriously.

What are your favorite podcasts?

I listen to NPR  podcasts a lot, most notably Pop Culture Happy Hour, Life Kit and It’s Been a Minute. I also frequently listen to the New York Times’ Popcast. They’re all my main source of news.

What is your favorite season of the year?

Easily fall. I may be biased because my birthday is in October, but I love the cooler temperatures, fall flavors and of course Halloween.

Do you collect anything?

Not at the moment, but I’m hoping to collect vinyl records. I am now a proud owner of a record player, so I’m hoping that I can start a collection with a variety of genres and from different decades.
