10 Things About Catalina Reyes
Tell us about yourself.
I am originally from Nicaragua, and my family and I moved to Miami, Florida in 2018 due to the socio-political crisis in my home country. I am currently a senior at Loyola University New Orleans majoring in Mass Communications with a concentration in Strategic Public Relations and minoring in Marketing.
I enjoy good communication and building relationships with various audiences. I am able to put this into practice as a student ambassador and campus tour guide, where I represent the university and share my experiences with prospective students and families.
What are your hobbies and interests?
I've been playing the piano since I was five years old, and I enjoy finding time to practice and enhance my skill set.
What have you enjoyed most about your internship so far?
What I have enjoyed the most about my internship at RW Jones is the opportunity to combine my enthusiasm for storytelling and research by writing and pitching letters to media outlets. I also enjoy creating content and marketing materials for clients.
What are you most passionate about?
My passion for art history has always been profound. I love going to museums because I realize I feel my sensitivity to art. For me, a museum encapsulates everything the world has lived through. Art is both a reflection of and a way of communicating the history of civilization over time.
When a sociopolitical upheaval erupted in my home country Nicaragua in 2018, I had firsthand experience with history. During this crisis, people were imprisoned and even killed by police for utilizing their voices to speak out against injustices and expose the government's lies. When the media that communicated the truth about the country was censored, I understood I wanted to pursue a career in which I could convey accurate and effective information to the public about what is occurring, which would subsequently be left for other civilizations to know the truth.
Additionally, I've known that I enjoy communicating since I was five years old when I began playing the piano.
There are a lot of ways to communicate and express oneself through art. Music is my favorite art form, though, because it is the perfect composition of communication and sound. Playing the piano allows me to reveal not just my creativity, but also my emotions in a voice louder than my own. It is a way for me to express my feelings, communicate them to myself and the public, and engage them via music. Nicaraguans, likewise, protested by singing songs in an attempt to express themselves via the art of music.
