A report by the Center for American Progress found that Black and Latinx educators are more likely to borrow federal student loans than White educators, resulting in higher debt coupled with more difficulty paying off the loans.
The report suggests higher debt lefts are discouraging Black and Latinx students from pursuing jobs in education, creating a lack of diversity amongst educators.
The study proposes an increase in pay for Black and Latinx educators, specifically those teaching in high poverty schools, could be the first step in resolving this issue.
