Enrollment in foreign languages dropped 9.2 percent, and foreign language offerings dropped 5.3 percent at colleges and universities between fall 2013 and fall 2016, according to a study conducted by the Modern Language Association.

The study also revealed that of the 15 most learned languages, only Japanese and Korean saw an enrollment increase. This is the second largest decline in foreign language enrollment since the early 1970s. Spanish and French remain the leading languages, but American Sign Language is now ranked third. German and Japanese are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
