Scott Butterworth Headshot

Senior Vice President

Scott Butterworth offers clients the skills and insights gleaned from decades of experience in mass-media and educational communications.

Scott joined RW Jones in 2023 from the boutique consultancy Fine Point Communications, which he founded to serve independent schools. Clients called on Fine Point for a wide range of quick-response projects, including crisis messaging, strategic consulting, magazine writing, website updates and media relations training.

He is intimately familiar with the unique opportunities and challenges facing independent K-12 education, and he understands school communities. He shares this knowledge with communications directors through a monthly newsletter, Refill, that highlights common scenarios at independent schools and proposes solutions.

From 2015 to 2020, Scott directed communications for National Cathedral School, an girls' school in Washington, D.C. During his tenure, the school launched an integrated marketing communications plan he crafted that centered on the brand statement “We believe in the power of young women.” This plan fueled substantial growth, including new records in admissions inquiries, dollars raised through annual giving and social media.

Scott came to education after 25 years in journalism, most of those as an editor at The Washington Post. Working with many of the best reporters in the world, he earned a reputation for quickly and calmly improving copy while meeting tight deadlines. While he has managed digital publications since 2007, Scott also has extensive knowledge of every element of print communications, including layout, graphics, proofreading and production.

Scott is a longtime supporter of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, serving on the Planning Committee for the 2021 CASE-NAIS Independent Schools Conference, and of the International Coalition of Girls' Schools. He has served as a judge for InspirED School Marketers' Brilliance Awards.

A Texas native, Scott holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston. He is an accredited beekeeper and, with his child, maintains a small apiary in the family's backyard.
