May 4, 2023 (Washington, D.C.) — Expanding its scope to independent K-12 schools, the RW Jones Agency announced today the acquisition of the boutique consultancy Fine Point Communications.

The addition of the Maryland-based consultancy positions RW Jones to offer its growing capacities to K-12 education clients, including strategic communications, pricing and tuition assessment, enrollment surveys and research data analysis, social media strategy and execution, and issues management support.

“Fine Point Communications already offers a wide range of quick-response projects, including crisis messaging, strategic consulting, magazine writing, website updates and media relations training,” said founder Scott Butterworth, who joined RW Jones earlier this year as Senior Vice President. “Working with the RW Jones team will supercharge those capabilities.”

RW Jones sees obvious synergy between the two firms’ work and clientele.

“Scott is intimately familiar with the unique opportunities and challenges facing independent K-12 education, and he understands school communities,” said Sean Rossall, CEO and managing partner of the RW Jones Agency. “We are delighted to be onboarding his talent and his firm’s sterling reputation.”

Before founding Fine Point Communications in 2020, Butterworth directed communications for several years at National Cathedral School, a nationally recognized girls’ school in Washington, D.C. He came to education after 25 years in journalism, most of those as an editor at The Washington Post.

Fine Point Communications becomes the trade name for RW Jones’s work with independent schools, with Butterworth as its managing director. He reports to managing partners Rossall and Scott Willyerd. In addition, Butterworth will continue to share his knowledge with communications directors through a monthly newsletter, Refill, that highlights common scenarios at independent schools and proposes solutions.

“We are delighted to have Scott and Fine Point Communications as part of RW Jones,” Willyerd said. “While independent schools’ educational aims are distinct from those of higher education clients, there are more similarities than differences.”

With the addition of Fine Point Communications, the RW Jones Agency continues its expansion and service to education. The company acquired Rankin Climate and launched RWJ Social in 2022, and this year also saw the debut of RWJ Research and RWJ Studios.

Begun by Richard W. “Dick” Jones in 1987 as Dick Jones Communications, the agency has grown into a full-service strategic consultancy.
